| Field notes | Terrestrial herb 4-5 m. Rhizome long-creeping, subterranean 1.5-25 cm. Scales cream to pale brown. Base of leafy shoot 6 cm diam., brown, subterranean with up to 28 leaves. Sheath smooth, flat, green. Ligule green, ± tinged reddish brown. Petiole 2.5 cm. Lamina to 8 x 18 cm, plain green below pale. Young leaf ± tinged red. Inflorescence from rhizome, ± subterranean, 10-18 cm, with 10-12 flowers. Peduncle 2-10 cm, scales cream. Bracts cream tinged pink or bright red. Bracteole pale pink. Calyx pink at apex. Corolla lobes red. Filament pale red. Anther red, dark at apex. Stigma red. Labellum orange-red, margin yellow, especially of lateral lobes. Taste of shoot bitter.
