| Field notes | Terrestrial herb 4-5 m. Rhizome long-creeping. Base 5.5 cm across, brownish. Sheath dark green, pale towards ligule. Ligule to 20 mm, with sericeous margin. Lamina subsessile to 86 x 16 cm, base cuneate, apex 1.5 cm acuminate. Inflorescence near base, to 24 cm, with 20 flowers, peduncle subterranean, 12 cm, cream, spike half embedded in the soil. Lower sterile bracts cream, upper red with white margin; largest 6 x 4.5 cm. Fertile bracts cream in lower third otherwise pink. Bracteole pale pink in upper half. Calyx slightly longer than stigma, dark pink towards apex, apex whitish pubescent. Corolla lobes pinkish red, as long as stigma. Labellum 5 cm long, orange-red, darker in centre, apex emarginate, 2 cm wide, central part narrow with orange margin. Filament cream, anther and stigma red.
