| Field notes | Terrestrial herb 4-5 m. Rhizome long-creeping. Base to 7 cm across. Sheath dark green or purplish. Ligule 13-17 mm, green or reddish near top of leafy shoot, margin sericeus on young ligules. Petiole 0-1 cm at the shortest side of the unequal leaf base. Lamina to 86 x 17 cm, broadest near middle, dark green, slightly raised veins above, spaced c. 1.5 cm, pale below or tinged purple - especially on young leaves; base ±unequal obtuse to cuneate, apex acute to acuminate 1.5 cm. Inflorescence near base, to 13 cm. Peduncle subterranean, 5 cm, scales brown, spike 7 x 4.5 cm. Lower sterile bracts pale green tinged red; upper red, all concave with a conspicuous white sericeous margin. Flowers red, in bud. Old infructescence to 9 x 10 cm, globular, peduncle to 6 cm.
