| Field notes | Terrestrial herb 1.5 m. Rhizome moderately creeping. Leafy shoot with 12-26 leaves. Base 2.5 cm across, reddish. Sheath greenish to reddish brown, most red towards top of shoot. Ligule c. 1 cm, golden pubescent. Lamina sessile, to 55 x 15 cm, plicate, widest above middle, mid groove ± reddish, pubescent below; base cuneate, apex broadly acuminate, asymmetric; margin with golden hairs, ± undulating. Young leaf variegated with red stripes. Inflorescence from rhizome to 9 cm long, with 3-9 flowers, 2 open at a time. Peduncle subterranean, 1-4 cm, scales pale pink. Sterile bracts pale pink to dark purple at apex or exposed part. Fertile bract dark purple with golden hairs. Bracteole red. Calyx red with golden pubescent apex. Corolla lobes reddish; dorsal lobes longer than lateral. Labellum spathulate with red apex, entire or slightly emarginate. Lateral lobes erect, short, recurved, white-margined, exposing the stamen. Stamen red, slightly angled. Stigma dark purple. Ovary with golden hairs. Taste weak, slightly bitter of ginger and cabbage. Deposited at: AAU, BKF, E, PSU (including material in spirit) |
