| Field notes | Terrestrial herb c. 4 m. Rhizome long-creeping; up to 75 cm between shoots, 7-15 mm across. Leafy shoot with 12-30 leaves. Base greenish brown, to 6 cm across. Sheath green, purple-brown near top, ± reticulate. Ligule 1.7 cm. Petiole 0-1 cm, lamina to 65 x 12 cm, shiny, plain green, glabrous, pale below; base asymmetric (one side almost always sessile to the ligule); apex ± acute. Inflorescence 9-21 cm long, originating from rhizome, with 3-(5) flowers, 1-3 open at a time, peduncle 3-10 cm, subterranean. Peduncular scales and bracts cream with pale brown tips. Bracteole pale pink. Calyx pale pink with darker apex. Corollla lobes pinkish red, hooding half of the anther. Labellum yellow with orange-red margin and apex. Apex entire or slightly bifid. Filament yellow, lateral lobes covering the anther. Anther red variously angled (more erect in less mature but open flowers), recurved, emarginate. Stigma white. Infructescence subterranean, pale brown, smooth, 3-locular. Taste of rhizome like peppery cabbage. Deposited at: AAU, BKF, E, PSU (including material in spirit) |
