| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to c. 6 m. Rhizome long-creeping: > 1 m between shoots, 2-3.5 cm across. Leafy shoot with up to 30 shoots. Base of shoot to c. 9 cm across, brownish green. Sheath brownish green. Ligule 2-2.5 cm, pubescent, brown. Petiole to 4.5 cm. Lamina to 107 x 22 cm, glabrous, plain green pale below, base unequal (1.5 cm), apex acuminate, asymmetric. Inflorescence from rhizome with 17-22-26 flowers, 12-17 cm long, peduncle 3-7 cm. Peduncular scales cream to brownish. Sterile bracts al cream or with pink apex. fertile bract pink in upper quarter. Bracteole membranous, cream, slightly pink at apex. Calyx pink at apex. Corolla lobes red at apex. Labellum orange with red centre, apex entire. Lateral lobes erect with pale orange margin. Infructescence 6 x 9 cm, with 20 fruits. Fruit 3.5 x 3.5 cm, ridged, pinkish brown (not mature). Taste unpleasant. Deposited at: AAU, BKF, E, PSU (including material in spirit) |
