| Field notes | Terrestrial herb c. 2 m. Rhizome long-creeping, 1-2 cm diam. Leafy shoot with 12-18 leaves. Base ca. 4 cm across with golden hairs. Sheath purple to reddish brown, ligule c. 1 cm, golden pubescent. Lamina sessile, obovate-lanceolate to 50 x 16 or 60 by 14 cm, plicate with dark green stripes above and corresponding purple below, esp. obvious when young. Inflorescence from rhizome, 5 to 60 cm from base with 5 flowers per inflorescence. Peduncle c. 4 cm. Flowers too old or in bud. Local name: pud. Young shoot edible as vegetable.
