| Field notes | Terrestrial herb 2-2.5 m. Rhizome long-creeping, 1.5 cm across, scales bright red. Leafy shoot with 6-16 leaves. Base of shoot 4 cm across, red. Sheath slightly pubescent, shiny, orange-red to dark red to greenish near top of shoot. Less red on older shoots. Ligule less than 1 cm, orange-pubescent. Lamina sessile, shiny, dark green, veins slightly raised, halves not symmetric, striped red, especially on new leaves (green stripes 1.5-2 cm; red 2.5-3 cm wide), to 67 x 15 cm, pubescent below. Inflorescence from rhizome 10-15 cm, of which peduncle is 3.5-9 cm with 4-6 flowers. Peduncular scales pale pink. Sterile bracts pale rose or burgundy dark at apex with orange pubescence. Corolla lobes red. Labellum 6 cm, red, apex entire, lateral lobes erect, margin recurved white to pale pink. Anther dark red. Stigma blackish red. Taste a little sour and bitter.
