Field notes Terrestrial herb to 3 m, rhizome relatively short-creeping forming a loose clump of 3 by 2 m. Base swollen to 3.5 cm, dark red. Sheath dark green with peculiar lacunar-reticulate pattern. Smell characteristic of buns with cardamom. Taste very bitter. Shoot with 24 leaves. Ligule less than 1 cm, golden pink. Lamina to 60 by 10 cm, dark green, below burgundy-brown. Sterile.
