| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 5 m, rhizome long-creeping, 3 cm in diam. Leafy shoot with 9–20 leaves, leafless lower 3.4 m. Base 7 cm in diam, pubescent, green. Sheath green, pubescent, 4 cm diam at 60 cm from base. Ligule densely pubescent, 2 cm. Petiole to 8 cm, canaliculate; lamina to 100 by 18 cm, glabrous, plain green mid rib groove pale. Inflorescence from rhizome with ca. 40 flowers, 13–20 cm. Peduncle 3–8 cm, scales whit; lower sterile bracts white, deeply concave, margin red; upper sterile bracts only white at lower third – upper reddish pink. Fertile bract and bracteole membranous, pale pink. Calyx pale pink with darker tip. Petal lobes pink with darker pink apex. Labellum with inrolled margin with a pale yellow line in center (appears white from the outside), tip bifid. Infructescence 6–7 cm long and 7–13 cm wide. Bigger bracts persistently ensheathing the fruit. Fruit star-shaped, greenish brown. Taste of inner sheath bitter-sour. Material in spirit. |
