| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 2 m, rhizome 6–8 mm, moderately creeping (< 40 cm between shoots). Base swollen 2.5–3 cm, green or reddish. Leafy shoot with up to 20 leaves. Sheath reticulate with longitudinally elongated lacunae: ribs shiny green – groove whitish green. Ligule 1–1.2 cm, slightly pubescent with yellowish brown ciliate margin. Lamina sessile, to 40 by 6.5 cm, sometimes tinged or pale purple below. Inflorescence from rhizome near base, with 26 flowers. Peduncle 1–4 cm. Lower bracts pale if not exposed, bracts red, sometimes with a greenish tip. Fertile bracts pale red. Petals shiny, deep red. Labellum pink with inrolled margin, central white to pale yellowish green or yellow line. Filament pale red, anther deep red, hinged. Stigma pale pink to white. Distinct smell like cakes with cardamom. Taste bitter, spicy, soapy. A population of the same species at 750 m differed vegetatively by slightly longer petiole (2 cm) and having leaves to 57 by 10.5 cm. (= 2010). Material in spirit. |
