| Field notes | Terrestrial herb, 1.5–(3) m, rhizome long-creeping, deep (15 cm below ground). Sheath pubescent, greenish brown. Shoot with 10–26 leaves; ligule pubescent slightly golden. Lamina plicate, pubescent below, to 47 by 11 cm. Inflorescence from rhizome close or far from base, 5–6 cm (not measuring the flowers) with a (mostly) short peduncle, few-flowered (7/8/8), all open at one time. Bracts cream (base) to red (exposed tip). Flowers all red, dorsal petal a broad hood, leaving the tip of anther and stigma exposed; labellum slightly pale at center, anther pale red and remarkably short, hinged, sessile; stigma erect. Infructescence subterranean (5 cm below surface) with a single fruit, golden haired. Taste sour, cabbage-like. Material in spirit. |
