| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 3 m, rhizome thin (1–1.5 cm), long-creeping, base swollen (3 cm), red. Shoot leafless 1.3 m with 20–26–32 leaves. Petiole on lower leaves: 3 cm of small leaf to almost zero at top (sometimes). Lamina to 44 cm by 9.5 cm, all glabrous. Inflorescence from base or sometimes along rhizome to 40 cm from base with 17–20–21–24–26 flowers. Peduncle 2–3–5–8 cm, sterile bracts cream (subterranean), fertile bracts pale brown. Calyx and corolla lobes red. Lateral lobes of labellum pale red; central lobe orange-yellow: Anther red, stigma dark red. Infructescence 6–7 cm diam; fruits softly spined. Seeds eaten by rodents (or birds). Taste strong pepper. Material in spirit. |
