| Field notes | "Terrestrial herb, 3 m, rhizome long-creeping. Leafy shoot with up to 30 leaves. Exposed rhizome scales reddish. Base reddish, 5-6 cm; sheath red, turning orange in the middle, to pale green with purple splashes; ligule 1.5 cm, purplish; petiole 1 cm, purple; lamina plain green, veins pronounced, below pubescent. Inflorescence from rhizome, 15 cm, peduncular bracts cream; upper bracts short, pale brown. 16 flowers per inflorescence. Fertile bracts and bracteoles membranous and colourless; calyx pale red; petal lobes purple turning almost black, lateral petals narrow; labellum red with yellow centre that stops 1 cm from tip; stamen sessile, hinged, pale red; stigma pale pink to white.
