| Field notes | "Terrestrial herb to 3 m. Rhizome long-creeping, up to 80 cm between leafy shoots, stout, about 2 cm diam., with large, stout scales cream to pale brown to reddish (depending on exposure). Base of shoot up to 7.5 cm diam., greenish brown, reticulate. Sheath green, reticulate. Leafy shoot leafless to 80 cm (first small leaf), with up to 22 leaves. Ligule unilobed; petiole (0)-1-2 cm; lamina plain green, slightly plicate, below pale and pubescent, base sometimes unequal. Inflorescence from base (13)-20-25 cm in total length with c. 18 fls; pecuncle (3 when young)-9-13 cm. Sterile bracts red (at least if exposed). Fertile bracts membranous, translucent white with pinkish tips, bracteole and calyx whitish with pink tip; calyx (2-4 mm) longer than petal lobes. Whole flower ca 10 cm long. Petals pale with red tips. Labellum ca. 40 mm, min. 15 mm wide, deep red, darker in the middle (no yellow), tip sligthly emarginate. Stamen pale pink with a dark red margin at crest. Stigma red. Infruct. half embedded in soil, ca. 6 cm diam, bracts persistent but shredded, fruit pink, ridged, immature. All parts of plant has a strong, soap-like smell like that of E. littoralis.
