| Field notes | "Terrestrial herb to 2.5 m. Rhizome raised on stilts 10-25 cm, short-creeping, 10-30 cm between shoots. Base swollen, 4-5 cm. Leafless c. 1.5 m, sheath greenish-brown, ligule green, petiole 3-5 cm; lamina plain green with length-wise riffled lines, margin red. Inflorescence 30-40 cm, erect; peduncular scales brownish, bracts reddish-brown, apices 'spread-out', sometimes collecting water. Ca. 70 flowers per inflorescence, 1-3 open at a time. Calys brownish-red. Corolla pale red to purple at tip of petals; labellum orange-red with central yellow line terminating 13 mm from apex, lateral lobes inrolled; anther pale red, stigma dark purple.
