| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 5 m, in clumps of 3-8 stems. Stem base 3-10 cm, Stem greyish-brown, reddish-brown when fresh. Sheath dehiscent leaving a fibrous cover. Leaves dark green, slightly plicate, below pale, clustered at top of shoots, peduncle erect to 80 cm. Inflorescence cylindrical, pending (11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18), flowering starts at the base which is the visible top, 1-2 flowers at the time (thus flowers for long periods). Calyx persistent, purple red to greyish, spiny, 3-lobed. Corolla cream, tinged orange at base, labellum white with central bright orange patch. Fruit with persistent calyx, seeds black.
