| Field notes | Terrestrial herb 2-7 m. Rhizome long-creeping, swollen near base of laefy shoot, with golden-brown hairs. Sheath glabrous, burgundy-red at base to brownish-red to patchy green and reddish brown at upper 20 cm, slightly flattend. Ligule pubescent. Lamina glabrous, plain green; pale below; apex blunt. Inflorescence from rhizome or base. 12-18 flowers per inflorescence. Peduncle 5-10-20 cm. Bracts red to dark purple. Fertile bracts purple-red with pubescent apex. Bracteole and calyx red with pubescent apices. Petals red. Labellum red, lateral edges white, dark red patch centrally in front of stigma 5 mm by 5 mm. Anther pale pink with red edges. Stigma dark purple. Fruits globular, 5-10 cm in diam., 2/3 buried in the soil, purple, pubescent with brownish hairs. Taste and smell of stem like pine or menthol.
