| Field notes | Terrestrial herb, 3-4 m. Rhizome short-creeping, 2-3 cm diameter, c. 20 cm. between shoots. Base of leafy shoot bright red, 4 cm diameters, 16 leaves per shoot. Sheaths reddish-brown, particularly the lower metre, slightly pubescent, petiole 5-7 cm, green; lamina plain green, pale below, base auriculate, unequal. Inflorescence at the base, many-flowered, calyx pale red, dorsal petal orange-red with dark red tip, labellum deep-red central lobe, lateral lobe pale red, anther red, crest ridged, dark purple, stigma purple-black; fruit creamy with a purple tinge.
