| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 4 m. Six leafy shoots in clump, 32 leaves per shoot, gradually increasing in length; sheaths green, shiny, glabrous, stem with solid pith for more than 2 m, distinct soapy smell; ligule pale green; leaves dark green, midrib white; peduncle arising from base, 40 cm; more than 40 fruits, purple red, spiny; flowers white to yellow.
