| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 7 m. Rhizome long-creeping, base of leafy shoot c. 11 cm in diam, sub globular; sheaths glabrous, brown at base, green above, margin purplish; ligule 1.5 cm, purplish-brown, lamina 70-100 cm by 11-16 cm, glabrous, midrib pubescent below, yellowish; inflorescence from rhizome ± close to the base; peduncle mostly subterranean, 2-10 cm, bracts pale orange-brown, pink at the apex, bracteole pale pink, calyx pale pink to purple red at the tip, petals red, labellum red with central yellow, lateral lobes pale to dark red at the margin, central lobe dark red, stamen and stigma pink; fruit unevenly ridged, 12 cm, pink with yellowish indumentum.
