| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 4 m. Rhizome thick, short-creeping, leafy shoots in dense cluster. Bracts of young shoots red, shoot base 6 cm diam. with 14-22 leaves per shoot, sheets yellow-green, ligule 1.5 cm, petiole 4.5-5 cm, plain green, pale below, leaf base truncate, unequal, peduncle arising from rhizome max. 5 cm from base of leafy shoot, 6-9 cm, bracts red, inflorescence. 17-20 cm, sterile bracts distichous, deep red, darker at the margin (brown to violet), receptacle 5-6 cm by 2.5, fleshy, fertile bracts pink with brown tip, bracteole and bracts pink, calyx pink with red tips, corolla tube pale pink to yellow, petals yellow with orange tip, labellum with burgundy red midlobe, lateral lobes pale yellowish red with burgundy margin, stigma burgundy, anthers attacked by insects, old fruits hemispheric 8-9 cm in diam.
