Field notes Canopy palm. Trunk about 20 m high. Circumference near crown 47 cm. Stilt roots with spines. Leaves pinnate. Closed crown shaft, ca. 2 m long, of light green colour. Petiole 23 cm, 3.5 cm in diameter. Rachis 195 cm. 19 pinnae on each side of rachis, wedge-shaped, regularly spaced, about 10 cm apart. Pinnae wedge shaped, central ones 71 cm long and 17 cm wide. 6 infructescences present. Infrafoliar. Peduncle flattened, 23 cm long, 4.3 cm wide. Rachis 10 cm long. Branched to 1st order. 15-20 branches, ca. 50 cm long. Fruits 3 cm long, 2 cm wide, green to black in colour. Seed coat green. Endosperm white, hard. Vernacular name: Kupat (Shuar). Uses: Edible heart (fresh slightly minty taste when raw).
