Field notes Liana. Stem dbh 1.5 cm in more distal parts up to 3.5 cm in diameter. Green to brown in colour. Armed with heavy spines along whole length. Leaves pinnate, spaced about 10 cm apart. Leaf sheath closed. Petiole 4 cm long. Rachis 150 cm, rachis tip extended into climbing cirrus. Both petiole and rachis with spines, cirrus in addition with climbing hooks. 15 pinnae on each side of rachis, with small black spines along mid rib. Central pinnae 27 cm long and 4.5 cm wide. Inflorescence prophyl 20-25 cm long, heavily armed with spines on inside, but not outside. Apart from that inflorescence is without spines. Peduncle 20 cm long. Rachis 26 cm. Branched to the 1st order. Ca. 20 branches, 10 cm long, green. Fruits light green. 2 cm long, 1.5 cm wide. Thin white fruit pulp. Seed coat brown with nervation. Endocarp white, ruminate. Vernacular name: Makaña (Shuar) Uses: Stem used for basketry.
