| Field notes | Canopy palm. 10 m, cbh 23 cm. Stem unarmed, distally (ca. 1 m) with remaining old leaf sheaths. Leaf scars barely visible. Internodes 12 cm. Leaves pinnate, with closed crown shaft, >60 cm long. Petiole 30 cm. Rachis 230 cm. Pinnae reduplicate, regularly distributed along rachis. Central pinnae 73 cm long, 4 cm wide. Inflorescence altogether 125 cm long. Yellow-white colour. Peduncle 45 cm. Branched to the 1st order. 95 branches, 50 cm long. Flowers cream coloured, few mm large. Infructescence infrafoliar, red. Fruits green, 5 mm long, with ""beak"" and remaining petals. Vernacular name: Tinkiwi (Shuar). Uses: Young inflorescence in bud edible. Heart edible. Fruits edible. Leaves used as thatch. Rachis used to make spears, spoons, arrows, and fish traps. Stem used to make blow dart guns. |
