| Field notes | Solitary tree; trunc 10 m high, straight, unarmed, often surrounded by zigzag roots from other plants, upper 3 m covered with old leaf sheaths; wood consists of an outer cream coloured layer, 0.5 cm thick, inner dark brown to black core interspersed with white fibres; dbh 12.7 cm; internodes 10 cm; leaf scars obscure; crown with 15 leaves, marcescent, litter trapping; leaf sheath open, 80 cm long, 20 cm wide, green, covered with light brown scales; petiole green, 50 cm long, adaxially flat to slightly channeled, abaxially round and covered with light brown scales in patches forming stripes; rachis green, 300 cm long, adaxial side flat to ridged, abaxially round and covered with light to dark brown scales; leaves pinnate, reduplicate, regularly arranged at a distance of 10 cm, length of the central pinnae 67 cm, adaxially glabrous dark green, abaxially white-brown; inflorescence interfoliar, branched to 1st order, 15 branches which are 35 cm long; peduncle 98 cm long; uses: palm heart eaten, edible grubs collected from rotting wood, leaves used to thatch roofs; local name: Romelatra or Hovotsiketry. |
