| Field notes | Large, solitary tree; trunc straight, unarmed; diameter near crown 17 cm; internodes 10 cm, green, leaf scars pale brown to white, 3 - 4 cm wide, clearly visible in upper parts of stem, obscure in lower parts; crown with 6 expanded leaves and 1 emerging, tristichous; crownshaft bulbous, 133 cm long, diameter 30 cm, green with scattered white-brown scales, bright orange-pink inside; petiole 26 cm long, green with scattered brown scales, adaxially channeled, abaxially round; rachis 456 cm long, green with scattered brown scales on both sides along whole length, adaxial side with two ridges and a central channel in basal parts, with a single central ridge distally, abaxially round; leaves pinnate, reduplicate, 165 pinnae on each side of rachis, arranged in groups of 3 - 4 pinnae, distance between pinnae within group 1 cm, distance betwen groups 10 cm, central pinnae 140 cm long; inflorescence infrafoliar, arching, branched to 3rd order (though only very few 3rd order branches), 15 1st order branches, branches 90 cm long, total inflorescence length 170 cm; peduncle 30 cm long; flowers with distinct "musty" smell; prophyl 60 cm long, 17 cm wide (emerging inflorescence), glabrous orange-pink outside, dark red inside (when old), several cm thick; uses: palm heart eaten; local name: Lafatoko or Tokoravina |
