Field notes Solitary tree; trunc 8 m high, straight, unarmed, often one dichotomous branching point above ground, upper half covered with long brown fibres; dbh 22 cm; internodes 5 cm; crown with 34 leaves, often marcescent, leaf sheath open, 70 cm long, 15 cm wide, disintegrating into fibres; petiole 62 cm long, green with light brown scales, adaxially flat, abaxially round; rachis 315 cm long, abaxially round, adaxially flat in basal sections and ridged in distal parts, leaves pinnate, reduplicate, 67 pinnae on each side of rachis, regurlarly spaced, central pinnae 80 cm long; inflorescence infrafoliar, green, branched to 2nd order, more than 10 1st order branches, total inflorescence length 125 cm; peduncle 90 cm long, yellow-white at base, green in distal parts; fruits green, yellow or red, round, diameter 0.8 cm, three small remaining petals, 0.4 cm long, inside of fruits consists of an orange layer, 0.1 cm thick and an inner white core; uses: leaves used to thatch roofs, fibres used to make ropes and as stuffing for madrasses; local name: Vonidrano
