Field notes Solitary tree, trunc 15 m high, often one dichotomous branching point above ground, upper section covered with red fibres which are 20 - 30 cm long; crown with 15 leaves, marcescent, often litter trapping, often supporting epiphytes; leaf sheath open, remains attached, disintegrating into red fibres, inside cream to yellow; petiole 100 cm long, green, abaxially round, adaxially channeled; rachis 300 - 400 cm long, green, abaxial side round basally and flat distally, adaxial side basally channeled with a central ridge and distally ridged; leaves pinnate, reduplicate, 60 pinnae on each side of rachis, regularly arranged, 5 - 10 cm apart, central pinnae 80 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, adaxial side glossy dark green, abaxial side dull dark green; inflorescence infrafoliar, branched to 2nd order, 10 - 15 1st order branches, 2nd order branches 40 cm long; peduncle green in distal parts, yellow at base, 90 cm long, round; flower buds threelobed, reddish; prophyl yellow with red edges and tip, 40 cm long, 7 cm wide; fruits green, round, diameter 2.0 - 2.5 cm, outer green layer 0.3 - 0.5 cm thick, inside ruminate yellow-brown layer, 0.3 - 0.5 cm thick, inner white core; uses: leaves used to thatch roofs; local name: Vonipotsy or Sirafotsy
