| Field notes | Solitary tree; trunc 10 m high, straight, unarmed, covered with old leaf sheath in upper part; dbh 9 cm; internodes 1 - 2 cm wide; leaf scars clearly visible, grooved; crown with 10 - 15 leaves; leaf sheath 25 - 30 cm long, 7 cm wide, closed till about midways, slightly fibrous edges, yellow to pale green with brown scales; petiole 5 cm long, green with brown scales, abaxially round, adaxially flat; rachis 120 cm long, green with brown scales, abaxially and adaxially round; leaves pinnate, reduplicate, 40 pinnae on each side of rachis, arranged in fanshaped groups of 3 - 4 pinnae apart from the basal pinnae which are solitary, distance between groups 10 - 13 cm, central pinnae 20 cm long, with swollen bases; abaxial side dull dark green, adaxial side glossy dark green; inflorescence interfoliar, green , pendulous, branched to 4th order, 7 1 st order branches, total length 80 cm; peduncle green with reddish-brown tomentum; prophyl yellow to pale green or brown, 40 cm long, 4 cm wide; uses: stem used as major roof and wall beams; local name: Fariovana |
