Field notes Solitary tree; trunc straight, sometimes leaning, 5 - 15 m high, often covered halfway down with old leaf sheaths and surrounded by zigzag roots from other plants; dbh 17 cm; internodes 5 - 7 cm; crown with 15 - 20 leaves, marcescent, litter trapping, often with epiphytes; leaf sheath open, 30 - 40 cm long, 15 cm wide; petiole 100 - 150 cm long, covered with brown tomentum, abaxial side round, adaxial side channeled; rachis 500 cm long, abaxial side flat, adaxial side ridged; leaves pinnate, reduplicate, 50 - 60 pinnae on each side of rachis, regularly spaced, 5 - 10 cm apart, central pinnae 70 cm long, 3 - 6 cm wide; inflorescence infrafoliar, pendulous, branched to 2nd order, branches up to 50 cm long; prohpyl 140 cm long, green, covered with thick bright red tomentum; fruits round, diameter 1.0 - 2.0 cm, green outside, inside orange, ruminate; uses: leaves used to thatch roofs, palm heart eaten, prophyl tomentum used as stuffing for madrasses, etc.; local name: Tandrokaka or Raphiala
